If your door handle made of upvc chrome Door handles needs replacing it's essential to choose the correct replacement for your home. Locksmiths can provide and fit high-security uPVC handles that come with additional security features.

The most important measurements are measurement A (known as PZ) and the length of the backplate (measurement F). Make sure to check these measurements to ensure that your new uPVC handle will fit.

Lever/Lever

A lever is a solid bar pivoted around a point (known as a Fulcrum). When you apply a force at the end of the lever it is likely to cause it to turn the fulcrum to the direction of the applied force. This rotation multiplies the force applied and allows you to lift or move something that would require a greater amount of force if you were to apply directly to the load.

The distance between the fulcrum and the point where you apply the force determines how far the lever can be moved. This is referred to as the mechanical advantage. The more the lever extends the greater the advantage in terms of mechanical. You can determine the mechanical advantage by dividing the distance from the fulcrum until the point at which you are applying the force by the distance between the fulcrum and where you will end the lever.

Levers can also have a variety of effects based on how the forces are applied. For example a lever of class 2 is inclined to turn in the opposite direction as the force of effort is applied (like a T-totter). If you press on the door handle and force it to open, the forces will cause rotational effects similar to this.

However, levers don't create energy. Levers multiply the force by changing small amounts of effort applied over a longer distance into larger amounts of force applied over smaller distances. This allows you to do more work in a shorter amount of time, and that is the reason why levers are frequently used for lifting heavy objects or moving large quantities of cargo. This is also the principle behind the levers that are found in many everyday tools, such as crowbars, fishing rods claws for hammers and even your own legs when you stand on the hand brake of your car.

Lever/Pad

Lever pad handles, also known as upvc door handles have levers on each side to operate the multipoint locks. They come in a variety of designs and finishes, and are suitable for a variety of materials, including UPVC, Aluminium & Timber doors. They are sold in pairs for the inner and exterior door with screws and spindles included. They are available in unhanded and handed versions to accommodate different types of users.

These can be used to replace the existing upvc door. The levers are raised to open all the multipoint locks and the key is turned to lock or close the door. They are more secure compared to lever handles for doors as the locking operation can only be accessed from the inside with a key unless the door is deadlocked.

They are not as secure as a cylinder bolt, but are a reasonable option to provide extra home security. The only downside is that they do not offer the same level of security as a cylinder bolt, and therefore won't prevent access from outside when the door is left open.

The majority of lever pad door handles made of upvc that we stock are made by the top manufacturers in the industry and will be manufactured with good quality components. In general, they come with a manufacturer's guarantee.

Lever/Snib

Lever latches, which are the simplest of all door handles, are commonly used. The lever is pulled down to activate a simple latch inside the door, which can be locked with a key. Some lever privacy handles operate based on this same principle however, with the addition of a snib (like knobs for doors).

A snib can be very useful tool, particularly in homes where privacy and security are crucial. You can use the snib button to block your guests from entering the home until they are prepared. This kind of handle can also be used on doors inside, such as those in bedrooms where you want to restrict outside access.

Snib buttons can cause problems in certain circumstances, especially when you have locks that are old and warped doors. If the snib is applied in error or by a person who isn't accustomed to it, the door could close and lock you out. You can usually get in by knocking the door frame or the letterbox. However this isn't a good idea.

If your uPVC has a snib, we recommend replacing it with a smart lock from the E-LOK 7 Series. These smart locks can be retrofitted to double turn pull handle kits. They come with coverplates to hide the holes in the existing ones to ensure an easy installation. The E-LOK app can be used to open doors using RFID cards or a mechanical keys. This popular handle style is typically used for front doors. It offers the benefit of preventing the door being opened without a key from the outside if the lock has not been deadlocked. This is accomplished through a 'pad' shaped external handle that locks in the gap between the handles and lock case to prevent the latch from being removed or the door from being opened.

This type of handle is designed for uPVC doors with multipoint locks which operate via a split spindle operation. This type of operation requires that the internal lever handle and the external pad handle both be fitted to the same lock case. This can be a simple replacement of the current uPVC handle, however it may also require a lock case change or a new set of handles to handle furniture.
