Apple Unlocks Your Car With Messages

Apple's Car Key feature lets you lock and start your vehicle using an compatible iPhone or Apple Watch. You can also share your access with family and friends -- a once-off request or a recurring arrangement securely encrypted and handled through Messages.

What is a key blank?

A blank key is a piece of wood that hasn't yet been cut to a particular bitting. The bitting is a profile of the cross-sectional that is a match for a particular lock cylinder. The blank key can also be imprinted by the manufacturer with their final logo. The flat end or bow of the key may be associated with a particular brand. This information could be used to locate keys with similar flat ends.

The blank on the key could be engraved with a message such as "Do not copy this key" or "It's illegal to duplicate this one." In some countries the keys are protected either by patent or design and are only available through licensed dealers. Dealers are typically an automotive locksmith, and they are able to sell these kinds of keys only under the conditions of their licence agreement with the designer of the design.

What is the main purpose of the profile?

At the annual Worldwide Developers Conference, or WWDC, Apple introduced an innovative way to unlock and start your car with the iPhone. Apple Car Key uses Bluetooth to communicate with your vehicle. Apple volkswagen car keys Key uses the phone’s accelerometer to detect your proximity to the vehicle. This technology lets drivers keep their phones in their pockets even when the car is locked. It also works when the phone is in an armband or a tilted.

The feature isn't currently available for all cars. At present, it's only in select BMW and Mercedes models. The list includes the 2021 and 2022 BMW 1, 2, 3 4, 5, 6 and 8 Series, the X5, and X7 SUVs, and the i4, i8, and iX electric vehicles. Mercedes-Benz offers Car Key compatibility for its E-Class SUVs and sedans for 2023.

Apple Car Key is a digital volkswagen key duplication that works over Bluetooth Low Energy or Ultra Wideband. This is more efficient than NFC and comes with built-in safeguards against relay attacks that may cause phones to become unlocked when they are not nearby. Apple Car Key requires an iPhone XS running iOS 12.2 and a new Apple Watch Series 5 with software version 7.5.

Once paired with a vehicle that is compatible, the iPhone can be used to open and close the door and start the engine, adjust settings, and access Express Mode. Express Mode allows drivers to keep their iPhone in their pocket and then automatically unlock the car by tapping on the lock button, in the event that they're wearing an Apple Watch or have a device that has Apple CarPlay installed.

Once a Car Key is installed, the digital keys of the car can be shared through iMessage with family and friends. They can even be temporarily given access to someone who is house-sitting. Those temporary keys are tokenized within the Wallet app, similar to credit cards, hotel room keys, and IDs.

What is the main purpose?

Apple announced at WWDC 2020 a new API named Car Key, which allows an iPhone to replace the physical keys of the vehicle of a compatible. It requires specific hardware, and isn't yet widely accepted but it's coming and could be a game changer for the automotive industry.

Car Key requires a compatible vehicle from the above list in addition to an iPhone or Apple Watch running the latest versions of iOS and watchOS. Then, the user will have to download the app for their car manufacturer or open an email or text message from the manufacturer of the car or the car's display, and follow the on-screen instructions. Once they have a digital key in Wallet, the user can lock and unlock their car by a few taps of their mobile or even start the engine with Express Mode by approaching their vehicle with their iPhone or Apple Watch.

Once the Car Key has been set up sharing access is simple. It works like time-limited electronic access to a smart door lock, and the owner can invite others through the Wallet app or send them an iMessage. Owners can disable keys by sending a message to the person who is done using the vehicle. A tokenized car access also comes with security advantages because only the owner's mobile phone and token are able to unlock the car.

It depends on the model, but it can include passive entry, which means that the car locks and starts automatically when you approach with your mobile device. Remote capabilities that let you control the car from a distance in an emergency or if you do not want your hands be used. At present, only BMW has opted to offer Car Key in a big way, however other manufacturers are likely to get on board in the near future. When you set up Car Keys you send a unique device identifier to the car manufacturer. It can then match this with other information it has about you according to privacy policies. You can then send a token to anyone within the Messages application to allow them to unlock the car and start it. You can limit the speed at which the driver is able to drive.

But, it's likely to be a while before it's widely adopted because there are a lot of obstacles to adoption. First, the auto industry will have to reach an agreement on a common technology set-up. And then there are the privacy and security concerns that most consumers have.
